It was indeed a black Tuesday in Kudu
village, on the ever-busy Bida-Mokwa Road in Niger State following the
death of 20 persons, including a police officer when petrol tanker
crashed and exploded.
The tragedy, eyewitness said occurred when the fuel tanker lost control while trying to navigate through a very sharp corner in the village.
The source said that a policeman, in the process of trying to rescue some trapped victims allegedly lost his life while the tanker went up in flames.
Confirming the tragic incident, Chairman of the council, Alhaji Adamu Jiya Sonfada, said several people who were injured in the disaster are currently receiving treatment at the general hospitals in Mokwa and Kutigi. He disclosed that the inferno destroyed houses and other valuables worth several millions of naira.
While empathizing with the families of the deceased, the chairman assured that the injured would receive adequate medical care at the expense of the council.
Also, the village head of Kudu, Alhaji Alhassan Kudu, described the incident as “a great disaster in history,” while he consoled the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
Niger state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Pius Edobo who confirmed the incident, however denied the death of a police officer.
“The command was not aware of the death of one of its officers,” he said, as he assured to verify the authenticity of the news.
